Tolerant accumulation and extraction of Cu from contaminated water by ryegrass under LED3A enhanced remediation

Abstract

This work examined the effects of N-dodecyl ethylenediamine triacetate(LED3 A)on ryegrass growth,antioxidative responses,Cu subcellular content and distribution,as well as the efficacy of LED3A-enhanced Cu extraction by plants.The results indicated that the application dosages of LED3A produce slight impact on ryegrass biomass.With the increase of LED3A concentration,the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD),peroxidase(POD)and catalase(CAT)of ryegrass first increase and then decrease,while the contents of superoxide anion(O2-·),hydrogen peroxide(H2 O2)and malondialdehyde(MDA)first decrease and then increase,due to enhancing its antioxidant defense system,which facilitates the removal of reactive oxygen species(ROS)and reduces oxidative stress.LED3A significantly promotes the uptake and accumulation of Cu in ryegrass and affects the distribution of Cu in cell walls and vesicles.Compared to L0,Cu+LED3A treatments(L10 to L200)result in an increase of Cu content in roots,stems and leaves by 10.39%to 44.25%and 2.33%to 18.81%,respectively.The total Cu accumulation of the plant is increased correspondingly by 11.64%to 37.79%.At the optimal dosage of LED3A,the removal efficiency of Cu is reached 76.00%.LED3A can promote the extraction and tolerance accumulation of Cu in ryegrass through chelation-induced mechanisms,and effectively increase the remediation efficiency of Cu by plants.
