Abstract

Thulium-doped yttrium aluminate crystal(Tm∶YA1O3,Tm∶YAP)can use commercial laser diodes(LD)as pump sources,followed by excellent mechanical and thermodynamic properties and a large emission cross section.These advantages make it an ideal gain medium for light sources in the 2 μm band.Since the Tm∶YAP crystal is anisotropic,the laser output performance are different when placed in different tangential and axial directions.Using a 793 nm LD as the pump source,an experimental study is conducted on the continuous light operation characteristics and wavelength tuning characteristics of the c-cut Tm∶YAP crystal when placed along the a-axis and b-axis(E//a and E//b).At the pump power of 28 W,the continuous optical output power is 8.66 W and the slope efficiency is 32.1% when E//a.When E//b,the continuous optical output power is 8.41 W and the slope efficiency is 31.1% .A birefringence filter is inserted in the cavity at a Brewster angle to tune the output laser wavelength.At the pump power of 15 W,the output laser wavelength tuning range is 1 888.8 nm to 2 084.4 nm and the tuning width is 195.6 nm When E//a.When E//b,the output laser wavelength tuning range is 1 889.6 nm to 2 043.1 nm,and the tuning width is 153.5 nm.The experimental results show that the c-cut Tm∶YAP crystal can achieve high-power and high-efficiency continuous light output and wide-range wavelength tuning when placed along both the a-axis and b-axis,and the wavelength tuning curves when E//a and E//b are approximately complementary,which has the potential to achieve high-power and narrow-pulse laser output.
