Visual Rhetoric and Image Construction of the"New Women"in the Pictorial of The Young Companion
摘要
Abstract
In addition to visually shaping the textual paradigm of"women beauty"for readers,the pictorial of The Young Companion also potentially conveyed the new expectations and standards of the society for women at that time,presenting concern and reflection on women's education,work,health and aesthetics,etc.In particular,the"new women"image in The Young Companion is inextricably linked to the strategic deployment of symbolic intertextuality and rhetorical devices.On the one hand,the two intertextuality practices of"verbal-visual intertextuality"and"visual-visual intertextuality"constitute the initial level of rhetorical representation of"new women"in this pictorial;on the other hand,the utilisation of rhetorical devices,such as visual metaphor and visual metonymy,serves conversely to reinforce the underlying structure of the representation of the"new women".关键词
