From Meaning to Form:A Semantic Analysis of Individual Quantifiers"个、且、搭"in Linxian Dialect of Shanxi Province

Abstract
The individual quantifiers"个[ku∂?22]、且[tɕhiε312]、搭[ta312]"exhibit a modal coloring that is superimposed upon their metrological function.They are thus one of the means of expressing subjectivity.The modal colors of the quantifiers"个"and"且"are dynamic,whereas"搭"is static.This distinction is determined by the dynamic and static meanings of modal colors,which are further influenced by the semantics of the noun words.The quantifiers"且"and"搭"are near-synonymous quantifiers affected by their own modal colors to express pejorative evaluations in interactive communication.The difference between these two near-synonymous quantifiers lies in the fact that the subjectivity of the quantifier"搭"is stronger than that of the quantifier"且".The affix"圪"exerts an emphatic effect when combined with the quantifier,modifying the attributes of people and objects.The individuality of the subject is more significant in the case of the quantifier"搭",whose etymology is derived from the phrase"疙瘩",which allows for a broader semantic scope than that of"搭".The semantic scope of the quantifier"且"is larger than that of the quantifier"搭",and its modification focuses on the types of people and objects as well as events.关键词
