From Fan Kuai to the Four Sages of Mount Shang(商山四皓):Analyzing the Main Obstacles to Liu Bang's Failed Attempt to Depose the Crown Prince

Abstract
The failure of Liu Bang,the founding emperor of the Han Dynasty,to depose the Crown Prince Liu Ying was not primarily attributed to the commonly cited influence of Zhang Liang and the Four Sages of Mount Shang(商山四皓).At that time,few ministers advised Liu Bang to proceed with the deposition.Instead,the key obstacle was the military power commanded by Fan Kuai,who was the brother-in-law of Empress Dowager Lü Zhi.Fan Kuai once hinted that he would by no means allow the Prince of Zhao-Liu Ruyi(208-194 B.C.)to ascend to the throne,compelling Liu Bang to rely on Fan Kuai to suppress rebellions across various regions.In the months leading up to Liu Bang's death,plans were underway to eliminate Fan Kuai and clear the path for deposing the Crown Prince.However,Liu Bang passed away before these plans could be executed.Subsequently,Liu Ying successfully ascended to the throne and was honored as Emperor Hui of Han(reigned 195-188 B.C.).The assertion that the Four Sages of Mount Shang(商山四皓)preserved Liu Ying's status as the crown prince represents a later reinterpretation or"historical narrative"by posterity.关键词
