An Investigation into the 1931 Literary Debate between Li Jinming and Xu Xiacun

Abstract
In 1931,Li Jinming's commemorative article on Goethe,published in The Beiping Morning Post,received an anonymous negative review.Suspecting Xu Xiacun as the author of the critique,Li Jinming engaged in a public letter debate with Xu concerning"literary creation"and"academic standards."As the conflict escalated,the debate shifted from differences in literary concepts to personal attacks.This dispute,amplified by public opinion,attracted the attention and interaction of readers from various social strata and significantly influenced the literary orientations of both parties.In essence,the Li-Xu debate delineates the dynamic interplay between"literary expression"and"open letters in newspapers"in modern China,illustrating a literary ecosystem involving writers,editors,and readers within the realm of the press.关键词
