Abstract

Thermal neutron sensitivity is a significant parameter for neutron detectors when measuring neutron information from unknown neutron radiation fields.The thermal neutron sensitivity of the detector needs to be calibrated in advance to ensure the reliability of the data.In addition,thermal neutron sensitivity is an important indicator of the performance of neutron detectors,and is of great significance in guiding the improvement and application of detectors.In this paper,in order to measure the thermal neutron sensitivity of a sample neutron multiwire boron tube detector,an experimental method to measure the thermal neutron sensitivity under a non-standard neutron field was proposed.The method established a neutron field containing thermal neutrons by slowing down the isotopic neutron source.The method used the activation foil method to make an absolute measurement of the thermal neutron flux at the space where the detector is located.The thermal neutron sensitivity of this neutron detector was then calculated in combination with the count rate of the detector.In addition,the thermal neutron sensitivity measurement results of this neutron multiwire boron tube detector in different geometrical arrangements were experimentally analyzed,and the optimal geometrical arrangement was determined.The results showed that the neutron multiwire boron tube had good thermal neutron sensitivity,and the measurement results were in good agreement with the manufacturer's results in calibration.These results has verified the feasibility and accuracy of this thermal neutron sensitivity test method proposed.This experimental method will facilitate the subsequent structural design,optimization,etc.of the detector.
