Characteristics and mechanisms of benzene sorption/desorption by soil organic matter from different sources

Abstract
Organic matter is the key component influencing the environmental fate and risk of(benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,and xylene)BTEX in soil and groundwater systems.In this study,three soil organic matters were selected as typical representatives to investigate the sorption and desorption characteristics of benzene under various environmental factors,and the mechanisms were analyzed and compared.The results indicate that the sorption capacity for benzene of black carbon(BC)prepared from two different biomass materials is sig-nificantly higher than that of humic acid(HA).The sorption of benzene on HA and BC is an exothermic and spontaneous physical process.Increased temperature and pH inhibits the sorption of benzene on organic matter,while increased ionic strength only inhibits the sorption process of BC.The sorption rate of benzene on BC is slower and the desorption hysteresis is stronger,which may be related to its rich pore structure.The sorption mechanisms of benzene on HA and BC include π-π EDA interactions between benzene ring and benzene and hy-drophobic partitioning of organic matter to benzene,where the interactions between BC and benzene are stronger.关键词
