Investigation on Brucella Infection in Sheep Flocks without Vaccination in Fixed-point Surveillance Sites in Henan Province from 2021 to 2023

Abstract

In order to identify the prevalence status and characteristics of sheep brucellosis in Henan Province,134 599 serum samples of sheep without vaccination from 4 685 farms/times in fixed-point surveillance sites collected from 2021 to 2023 were tested for antibodies against Brucella,and the results were analyzed by different months,regions and inventory sizes.The results showed that the average positive rates of brucellosis were 4.55%and 0.90%at farm and individual levels,respectively,with a wavy trend in each year,and greatly higher in March and August than those in other months(P<0.05);the positive rate at farm level ranged from 1.30%to 13.19%,while that at individual level was from 0.21%to 2.87%,depending on different regions,to be specific,higher in western and central Henan where the positive rate was obviously different from that in other regions(P<0.05);and higher in free-range households with an inventory of less than or equal to 100 sheep compared to that in intensive farms(P<0.05).In conclusion,sheep brucellosis had been controlled to a low prevalence level in the province,with unstable control effect,though,and it was prevalent with certain characteristics of temporal,spatial and inter-group distribution.It was indicated that,there were still challenges for prevention and control of sheep brucellosis in Henan Province,which required to specifically formulate scientific and reasonable prevention and control measures according to the epidemiological characteristics of the disease,and to strictly implement them in seasons with high risk of occurrence,key regions and free-range sheep flocks to reduce possible risk of disease occurrence or spread.
