Business Model Innovation Orientation in Digital Contexts:Value or Efficiency?

Abstract
How digital context configuration affects digital native and non-native enterprises to achieve different business model innovation(BMI)orientations becomes a critical issue to be addressed in enterprise innovation management.Based on the data of 105 digital native and non-native enterprises that feature specialization,refinement,uniqueness,and innovation(SRUI),this paper applies the technology-organization-environment(TOE)framework to explore the characteristics of digital context to refine the influencing factors of BMI orientations.Then,it uses the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis(fsQCA)method to solve the multiple paths of enterprises with different digital native attributes to achieve value-oriented or efficiency-oriented BMI. The findings are as follows.(1)Technological,organizational,and environmental factors play a synergistic role in the high value-oriented and efficiency-oriented BMI paths of digital native and non-native SRUI enterprises.(2)The high BMI paths include the complete,adaptive,and single types.Environment-supportive,technology-organization-synergy,technology-environment-supportive,and complete paths play a universal role in the high BMI paths of these enterprises.In contrast,the dynamic capability-driven and the organization-environment-pull paths lead to an efficiency-oriented BMI of digital non-native enterprises only.(3)The low BMI paths can be categorized as short-board,constraint,and puddle types.The short-board type exists only in the low BMI path of digital native enterprises,while the technology-environment constraint and puddle types exist only in the low BMI path of digital non-native enterprises.Moreover,the organization-environment constraint type plays a universal role in the low BMI paths of these enterprises.(4)The institutional environment has an important impact on the high BMI path of digital native enterprises,and dynamic capability plays an indispensable role in the high efficiency-oriented BMI of digital non-native enterprises. The main contributions are as follows.First,based on the TOE framework and configuration theory,this paper comprehensively depicts how digital contextual configuration affects different BMI orientations,enriching the research on BMI antecedents,types,contexts,and specific pathways.Second,by comparing the similarities and differences of BMI orientations of digital native and non-native SRUI enterprises,it enriches the research on BMI heterogeneity and boundary conditions.Finally,the findings expand the theoretical boundaries of the source of competitive advantages of enterprises in the digital context from the perspective of business models,providing systematic solutions for the preference of BMI paths of enterprises with different digital native attributes to accelerate digital industrialization and industrial digitalization in China.关键词
