Comparative Analysis of Oral Health and Porphyromonas gingivalis Infection in High-incidence and Low-incidence Areas for Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract
Objective To compare the oral health status and characteristics of Porphyromonas gingivalis(Pg)infection in asymptomatic cancer-free subjects between high-and adjacent low-risk areas for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)in Henan province,aiming to provide a rationale for the etiologic prevention of ESCC.Methods This study recruited 1 388 and 486 asymptomatic cancer-free subjects from high and low-incidence areas,respectively.The demographic features of these subjects were collected via direct interview and the oral health status was evaluated,followed by blood sample and oral swab sample col-lection.Real-time quantitative PCR was used to measure Pg abundance and Logistic regression assay was used to evaluate the effects of Pg abundance on poor oral health.Results Compared with the counterparts in low-incidence area,the high prevalences of gingi-val bleeding with moderate and severe degrees,tooth loss of＞17,and daily tooth brushes＞once were ob-served in symptom-free subjects from high-incidence area for ESCC.High-abundance of Pg were signifi-cantly correlated with poor oral health as well as sub-sequent risks of dental calculus,gingival bleeding,and tooth loss in subjects form high-risk area for ESCC.Conclusion The poor oral health status and Pg infection rate were significantly higher in asympto-matic subjects from high-incidence area for ESCC than those in the adjacent low-incidence area in Henan province.High-abundance of Pg in oral cavity was significantly correlated with the increased risk of poor oral health.Our findings provide a rationale for etiological prevention in susceptible population from high-incidence area for ESCC.关键词
