Effects of Light Competition on the Growth,Biomass Allocation and Leaf Stoichiometry Characteristics of Chinese Fir Seedlings

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the influences of light competition on the growth charac-teristics of Chinese fir(Cunninghamia lanceolata)seedlings,as well as the response strategies of leaf C,N,and P stoichiometry to gain a deeper understanding of the nutrient utilization and growth adaptability of Chinese fir leaves in a light competition environment.Seedlings of Chinese fir clone with uniform growth status were selected as research objects.Indoor pot experiment was adopted.BY artificially adjusting the height difference of adjacent potted containers,a simulated light competition environment between the seedlings were created to form the dominant seedlings and their neighboring competing seedlings character-ized by obvious competitive advantages in light resources.Three light competition intensities were set based on the pot height difference intensive light competition(height difference 0 cm),moderate light com-petition(height difference 8 cm),and mild light competition(height difference 16 cm).After one year of measuring and analyzing the light competition simulation treatment,the seedling height and ground diame-ter of the participating seedlings were tested.The study analyzed the differences in the biomass of various organs and the content of C,N,and P of leaves,as well as the characteristics of the stoichiometric ratio be-tween the elements.As the light competition intensity decreased,the height of competing seedlings in-creased by 6.04%compared to dominant wood,while the ground diameter decreased by 17.51%.The root-to-head ratio and root biomass allocation ratio also increased to 40.0%.Additionally,the N content of the leaves in competing seedlings increased to 21.63 g/kg.On the other hand,the C and P contents of domi-nant seedling leaves decreased and then increased with a decrease in light competition intensity,which was significantly greater than that of competing wood(P<0.05).The C/N and C/P of dominant seedlings in-creased firstly and then decreased,while the C/P of competing seedlings increased with the decrease of light competition intensity.Furthermore,the dominant seedling leaf biomass had a correlation with P content,while the competing seedling stem biomass was correlated with both leaf biomass and P content.Chinese fir seedlings exhibit varying growth and leaf stoichiometry characteristics depending on their position in re-lation to light resource competition.Their adaptations differ according to the intensity of the light competi-tion.When faced with reduce light competition,the seedlings increase their competitive intensity and dis-tribute their biomass mostly to underground roots,resulting in a"slender height"morphology.As light competition intensity increases,the biomass distribution shifts towards the leaves,decreased biomass accu-mulation,and decreased C and P content,leading to a"dwarf and coarse"morphology.关键词
