Abstract

Four fiber reinforced polymers grid-engineering cementitious composites(FRPG-ECC)strengthened reinforced concrete(RC)columns and two RC columns were tested under axial compression.The effects of FRP grid layer and stirrup spacing on the failure mode,load carrying capacity and deformation ability were studied.Experiment results show that the FRPG-ECC layer can effectively alleviate the brittle failure of RC columns,FRP grid gradually ruptures during the post-peak stage,and the strengthened column can maintain its integrity.The FRPG-ECC layer can effectively improve the load carrying capacity and deformation ability of RC columns.Compared with the un-strengthened columns,the load carrying capacity,axial shortening at ultimate load and axial shortening at failure load of the strengthened columns are enhanced by 5.1%~18.1%,104.5%~221.9%and 152.0%~302.8%,respectively.A strength model for the concrete confined by FRPG-ECC layer was developed by introducing the confining stiffness and concrete strength,and then a predictive formula for the load carrying capacity of strengthened RC columns was proposed.The predictions are in good agreement with the test results.
