Abstract

Solar flares are intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation that disrupt Earth's magnetic stability,causing ionospheric disturbances,interfering with radio communications,and impacting spacecraft and satellite navigation systems.This study examines the impacts of solar flares on vessel AIS communication,focusing on the East China Sea.Using AIS data from early May 2024,spanning periods before,during,and after several flare events,we analyze the impacts on AIS communication.The findings show no significant relationship between solar flares and the transmission error rate of AIS data itself;however,the variance in apparent velocity,calculated from vessel positioning and timing information in AIS data,varies noticeably across these periods.This result indicates that solar flares have a considerable impact on AIS-derived positioning information for vessels.
