Abstract

To explore the characteristics of algal removal and fate of algal organic matter(AOM)dur-ing ozonation treatment of algae-laden water with/without natural organic matter(NOM),the typical cyanobacteria strain causing blooms,Microcystis aeruginosa,was used to investigate variations of al-gal density and cell membrane integrity with dosing various concentrations of ozone.In addition,the dissolved organic matter in the ozonation process was characterized by dissolved organic matter(DOM),UV-vis absorption spectra and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra.The results showed that ozone had the ability to disrupt cell membranes of Microcystis aeruginosa,reduce algal density,and lead to release and oxidation of intracellular biopterins with humic-like fluorescence.In the presence of NOM,its aromatic moieties preferentially reacted with the oxidant,causing significant delay in algal cells damage and AOM release.However,when the ozone dosage was sufficient to de-stroy algal cell membranes completely,biopterins would still undergo release and removal due to the excess oxidant.Therefore,the ozone dose required in algae-containing water treatment can be regula-ted according to the turning point in the trend of the characteristic fluorescence of biopterins with ozone dose.
