Abstract

Utilizing waste cotton as a source of microcrystalline cellulose(MCC),octadecylamine-melamine formaldehyde resin(OMF)was employed for hydrophobic modification to obtain OMF-MCC as a reinforcing material for waste cotton microcrystalline cellulose/polylactic acid composite films(OMF-MCC/PLA).Material characterization and mechanical properties tests were conducted on pristine and modified waste cotton MCC and the OMF-MCC/PLA composite films.The results showed that the MCC extracted from waste cotton textiles had a smooth surface with wide size dispersion,and OMF modification increased the hydrophobicity of waste cotton MCC successfully.Compared to the pure PLA films,the tensile strength of the OMF-MCC/PLA composite films was enhanced significantly with the addition of OMF-MCC,maximally increased by 166.6%.The elongation at break of OMF-MCC/PLA composite films only experienced a slight decrease.The obtained OMF-MCC/PLA composite films demonstrated excellent mechanical properties.
