Abstract

The experiment aimed to study the effects of Eucommia ulmoides extract on the growth performance and serum indexes of calves.A single-factor randomized block design was used,selecting 30 healthy newborn Holstein calves delivered naturally,randomly divided into a control group and an experimental group,with 15 replicates in each group,and one calf per replicate.The control group was fed a basic diet,while the experimental group was fed a basic diet plus 2 kg/t of Eucommia ulmoides extract for 62 days trial period.The results showed that the average daily weight gain of the calves in the experimental group increased compared to the control group(P>0.05).The frequency of mild diarrhea and total diarrhea in the experimental group were extremely reduced compared to the control group(P<0.01).The levels of serum albumin(ALP),interleukin-4(IL-4),interleukin-10(IL-10),and activity of glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px)in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.05),while the contant of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)was significantly lower than that in the control group(P<0.05).The study indicates that adding 2 kg/t of Eucommia ulmoides extract to the feed of calves can enhance their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities,reduce the incidence of diarrhea,and improve growth performance.
