Abstract

Lightning strikes pose a serious threat to the safe operation of transmission lines and equipment reliability.At present,the research on the current distribution characteristics of tower lightning in 500 kV transmission lines under real environment and operating conditions is not enough.In order to enhance the lightning protection level of transmission lines,the author conducts simulation calculations of lightning strikes on a 500 kV transmission line using ATP-EMTP.The research focuses on investigating the ar-rester shielding factor of towers under various conditions.The research results indicate that the steeper the wavefront of lightning current,the greater the shielding factor of the tower,while a larger half-wave time leads to a smaller shielding factor of the tower.The amplitude of lightning current has no effect on the shielding factor.Additionally,a higher tower grounding resistance results in a smaller shielding fac-tor.Moreover,the shielding factor decreases when the tower at the terminal end is struck by lightning.Furthermore,the use of good conductor ground wires can reduce the tower's shielding factor.Rational de-sign and placement of lightning protection facilities for towers based on the research results are crucial for mitigating the impact of lightning strikes on transmission lines.
