Abstract

To elucidate the enhancement effect that manganese(Mn)fertilizer application can have on reducing cadmium(Cd)accumulation in rice grown in Cd-contaminated farmland pre-treated with soil stabilization,a special pot experiment was conducted in the field,with and without Mn addition.Two soil pre-treatments were applied before the pot experiment:the control and the alkaline zeolite treatment.Rice biomass,Cd contents of the rice,and soil were measured for both the early and late rice crops.Compared with the control,the zeolite pre-treatment decreased Cd content in early and late rice by 69.1% and 90.7%,respectively.Mn fertilizer further reduced the Cd content of early and late rice grains to 0.104 mg·kg-1 and 0.011 mg·kg-1,respectively.When combined with the zeolite pre-treatment,the reduction rates were 19.4% and 31.3%,respectively.Cd contents of rice grown in pots without holes at the bottom were generally lower than that in pots with holes.These results indicate that after soil stabilization,the application of Mn fertilizer can further reduce Cd accumulation in rice,and the pot experiment in the field provides a useful tool for studying the effects of multiple factors on Cd accumulation in rice.
