Abstract

The aims of this study were to identify the toxic effects of zearalenone(ZEA)on the testis and epididymis of 40 days Bama boars by establishing the ZEA poisoning model.In addition,it was valued that whether taurine could reduce the toxic damage of ZEA.The results of histology and immuno-histochemistry showed that 3 mg/kg ZEA resulted in the vacuolation of seminiferous epithelium in porcine testis and a large number of undifferentiated round germ cells in the epididymal ducts.These infers that ZEA blocks spermatogenesis.In addition,the RT-qPCR results showed that ZEA decreased the CX43,OCCLUDIN and VIMENTIN mRNA levels in the testis,which infer that ZEA inhibits the synthesis of CX43,OCCLUDIN and VIMENTIN in sertoli cells.Whereas taurine supplementation significantly alleviated testis vacuolation,recovered the spermatogenesis and increased the gene expression levels of CX43 and VIMENTIN caused by ZEA at a certain degree.These results indicate that ZEA affects the fertility of boars by damaging the seminiferous epithelium and spermatogenesis,and taurine has a potential appli-cation prospect in reducing the reproductive toxicity of ZEA in boars.
