Abstract

The longitudinal connector is a crucial component of the joints in prefabricated utility tunnels,which connects the prefabricated pipes along the longitudinal direction to form a cohesive unit.To investigate the impact of different types of connectors on the mechanical performance of the structures and joints within prefabricated utility tunnels,and to better apply them,shear model tests were conducted on the longitudinal connectors and socket joints.This research is based on the underground utility tunnel project located in the Xindu District of Baotou City.The differences in failure and shear performance of joints under four working conditions were compared,and the advantages and disadvantages of different types of connectors were discussed.The research results showed that,in the early stages of joint failure,the extrusion effect of the pipe is dominant,and in the later stages,the synergistic deformation effect of the longitudinal connector becomes more significant.The performance of connectors is positively correlated with the applied load.Among the connectors tested,GL-1(short screw)exhibited the best synergistic deformation capability,followed by GL-3(steel strand),with GL-2(long screw)demonstrating the least effectiveness.The damage stages differ between joints with and without connectors.GL-0(without connectors)can be categorized into a partial slip stage and a damage development stage.The longitudinal connectors can mitigate the damage process of the tunnel,with GL-1,GL-2,and GL-3 being roughly classified into a partial slip stage,a total slip stage and a damage development stage.The short screw connector is particularly effective in reducing tunnel dislocation,achieving reductions of 9.13%and 1.70%compared to GL-2 and 3 respectively.It is recommended that the length of the longitudinal connectors minimized in the design of utility tunnels,provided that they do not interfere with the joint arrangement,as this approach helps maintain the overall stability of the structure.The research findings offer valuable insights for further optimizing the design of prefabricated underground utility tunnel joints and longitudinal connectors.
