Abstract

Direct-write 3D printing often adopts plungers or screws as driving components for extruding propellant slurries.To explore the impact of different extrusion mechanisms on the flow characteristics and molding performance of the slurries,the nozzle flow field were sinulated using various extrusion speeds,and 3D printing experiments were performed to validate the printing effects through the preparation of star-shaped internal hole specimens.The results indicate that propellant slurries extruded through a plung-er-based device exhibit relatively stable extrusion flow characteristics,manifesting high velocity,high shear rates,and low pressure distributions in the vicinity of the nozzle outlet.In contrast,propellant slurries extruded through a screw-based device display more complex fluid characteristics,backflowis observed in the gap between the extrusion channel wall and the screw.As the extrusion speed increases from 10 mm/s to 50 mm/s,the extrusion backflow within the channel rises from 1.5 mm/s to 20 mm/s.This signif-icant extrusion backflow has a substantial impact on the molding quality of the printed samples.Additionally,under a formulation system containing 84%solid propellant surrogate material,the printing effect of the plunger-based extrusion structure is notably su-perior to that of the screw-based extrusion structure.Research results provide valuable insights for selecting appropriate printing methods in solid propellant 3D printing processes.
