Abstract

In the context of China's"dual carbon"goals,green innovation has become a crucial pathway for manufacturing enterprises to achieve low-carbon transformation and sustainable development.This study investigates the synergistic driving mechanisms behind corporate green innovation from a configurational perspective.Using data from 417 manufacturing A-share listed companies,this study applies fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis(fsQCA)to explore the impact of internal and external factors on green innovation. The findings demonstrate that corporate green innovation is a result of the interaction of multiple internal and external dimensions.This study identifies three paths leading to high green innovation:(1)An"internal factors-driven"path,characterized by high human capital and proactive engagement under media attention;(2)a"joint regulatory-talent driven"path,involving synergy between regulatory pressure,human capital,and talent capabili-ties;and(3)a"multi-factor driven"path,where human capital,organizational slack,and regulatory pressure work together to enhance innovation outcomes. The study finds that human capital consistently plays a central role across all pathways,suggesting that invest-ment in skilled talents is crucial for manufacturing firms to enhance their green innovation capabilities.The findings underscore the importance of complementary factors,such as regulatory frameworks and media attention,which can either amplify or hinder innovation depending on how they interact with internal capabilities. This study contributes to existing literature by offering a configurational perspective on the drivers of corporate green innovation.It departs from conventional linear models by highlighting the complex nonlinear interactions a-mong internal governance,regulatory environments,and market pressures.The study's use of fsQCA enriches the methodological approaches in green innovation research,providing new insights into how firms can align internal re-sources with external requirements to achieve sustainable growth. The policy recommendations highlight the importance of establishing a diversified and collaborative framework to promote corporate green innovation.This includes integrating environmental regulations with financial incentives,implementing differentiated regulatory standards based on firm characteristics,and fostering a multi-stakeholder governance ecosystem.The government should design comprehensive policies,offer targeted support to enterprises,and encourage active involvement from media,investors,and the public,aiming to transform regulatory pressures into drivers of innovation and create a conducive environment for sustainable development. This study reveals the intricate relationships between internal and external factors influencing green innovation in manufacturing firms,providing theoretical and practical guidance for enterprises and policymakers to drive green development and enhance corporate sustainability in the manufacturing sector.
