Abstract

3-Methylpyridine(3-MP)was chosen as the model pollutant and a two-compartment microbial fuel cell(MFC)was constructed to study its performance and mechanism of treating wastewater containing pyridine pollutants.After 3-MPacclimatization,the MFC anode biofilm thickness reached 40 μm,in which functional bacteria including Rhodopseudomona,Chryseobacterium,Undibacterium,Devosia,Gordonia,Truepera,Lentimicrobium,Bradyrhizobium,Limnobacter,Shinella,and Pseudonocardia increased notably.Within 64 h of reaction,120 mg/L3-MP can be completely degraded in the MFC.Under the 3-MP mass concentration of 30 mg/L,the mineralization rate of the C element was 69.4%,and the N element was mainly converted into NH4+and NO3‒.By employing the Haldane model for 3-MP kinetic analysis,the maximum degradation rate,semi-saturation constant,inhibition constant,and maximum specific degradation rate were fitted to be 3.5 mg/(L·h),59.9 mg/L,201.0 mg/L,and 0.58 mg/(L·h·cm2)respectively.Based on the intermediate product analysis,it was inferred that 3-MP was mainly degraded via two pathways,including the oxidation of methyl groups on the pyridine rings,and double bond breakage of 1,4-dihydro-3-methylpyridine.
