Abstract

Top-of-slope loading is an important cause of instability of high-fill multistage slopes.In order to reveal the evolution mechanism of the internal instability damage of multistage slopes under the effect of top loading,a transparent soil test was carried out on the top of multistage slopes,with loading speeds of 0.006 and 0.03 cm/s,and the total settlement at the top of the slopes was 3 cm,and the changes in the displacement field of the multistage slopes and the evolution process of the sliding surface were analyzed by the particle image velocimetry technique(PIV)and the PFC2D simulation software,and the plastic zone penetrated from the top to the toe as the criterion for the slope instability.The plastic zone from the top of the slope to the toe of the slope was taken as the criterion of slope instability.The results show that the numerical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results,which verifies the correctness of the model test results;the deformation damage of the slopes under the two loading speeds are all shear-through sliding damage,and the faster loading speed will increase the degree of slope damage,which is manifested in the formation and expansion of shear zones as well as significant changes in the direction of the displacement vector and the rotation angle of the slopes;the slopes under the two loading speeds ultimately generate a The slope under both loading rates eventually generates a circular slip fracture surface through the back edge of the slope to the toe,and the faster the loading rate,the larger the depth and area of the slip fracture surface.
