摘要

Abstract

This paper explores the growth process of modern engineers,presenting a"two-stage theory"to illustrate this journey and employing ecological metaphors for an in-depth examination.The paper initially highlights that the engineer's growth trajectory can be divided into two distinct phases:the educational phase within institutions and the continuous learning and development phase in the workplace.During the educational phase within institutions,higher engineering education institutions serve as the"cradle of engineers",where individuals receive comprehensive training in theoretical knowledge and practical skills,laying a solid foundation for their future engineering endeavors.This phase is likened to the"stem cell"stage in biological development,emphasizing the importance of nurturing foundational and versatile qualities.Upon transitioning to the workplace,engineers enter the phase of continuous learning and development.This stage is metaphorically compared to the"somatic cell"stage,where engineers,through practice,training,and collaboration,continually accumulate experience,refine their professional competencies,and gradually specialize into mature professionals with unique expertise.The paper underscores the significance of workplace practice in the engineer's growth,emphasizing that practical experience is vital for honing and validating their skills.Furthermore,the paper delves into the necessity of continuing engineering education.With technology advancing at an unprecedented pace,engineers must continually update their knowledge and skills to keep pace with the evolving demands of the engineering field.However,the current state of continuing engineering education in China faces challenges such as incomplete systems and unclear responsibilities.To address these challenges,the paper proposes reforms aimed at establishing a comprehensive and effective continuing education system and clarifying the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders,with a particular emphasis on the leadership role of industry associations.In conclusion,the paper summarizes the characteristics and interrelationships of the two growth phases and calls upon all relevant stakeholders to collaborate in advancing engineering education reform,thereby contributing to the cultivation of competent and outstanding modern engineers.By utilizing ecological metaphors,the paper offers a fresh perspective and approach to engineering education reform,facilitating a deeper understanding and more effective guidance of the engineer's growth process.
