Abstract

To investigate the etiological agent and drug susceptibility associated with lethal edema disease of Whitmania pigra,an Aeromonas veronii strain GC21071301 was isolated from lesions of a diseased leech using a dilution-plate method.The strain GC21071301 was identified as Aeromonas veronii by pathological observation,regression infection,determination of physiological and biochemical characteristics and 16S rDNA molecular biological analysis.The results showed that the clinicopathological characteristics of lethal edema of Whitmania pigra included edema,whiteness,severe transparency,a large amount of fluid accumulation in the body cavities and hard nodes at the end or middle of the body.These pathological changes gradually became necrosis,stiffness and spread to the whole body with high fatality.The healthy leeches were experimentally infected with the strain GC21071301.The infected leeches started to die within 24 h post infection and all died on day 5.The major signs were consistent with lethal edema of Whitmania pigra.Moreover,29 antibacterial drugs were tested for their susceptibility,of which tetracycline,quinolones and aminoglycoside antibiotics were effective drugs for the treatment of lethal edema of Whitmania pigra.The results of this research could provide a reference for lethal edema disease in Whitmania pigra.
