Structural Stress-Based Fatigue Assessment of Rib-to-Deck Double-Side Welded Connections in Orthotropic Steel Decks

Abstract
Orthotropic steel decks(OSDs)are prone to fatigue problems despite of their advantages such as lightweight and high load-bearing capacity,especially for rib-to-deck welded connections.Among the fatigue optimization structures,the new type of double-side welded connections can change the dominant fatigue failure mode by improving the geometric structure.To reveal transformation mechanism of fatigue mode,a shell-solid coupling model was established by ABAQUS,and the fatigue loading was realized by DLOAD subroutine.Further,single-side and double-side welded connections were compared based on structural stress method,and the parametric analysis of double-welded connections was conducted.The results of parametric analysis show that,compared with other parameters,the thickness of deck brings the greatest impact on the structural stress at the concerned position,but does not change the fatigue failure mode.The structural stress at the root and toe of internal and external welds decreases significantly with the increase of deck thickness.The fatigue mode of double-side welded connection is related to both internal and external weld size,and the external weld size should be controlled within a certain range.For the basic structure analyzed,fatigue mode changes when external weld size is about 10 mm.The inner weld can reduce the structural stress at the root of the original single-side weld,and the critical size is about 3 mm.关键词
