Abstract
The concept of'conservative surgery'manifests the urban conservation ideas of Patrick Geddes(1854-1932).By examining Geddes's the-oretical works, town planning reports, and existing research, this article summarises the evolution,the-oretical framework, applications, and philosophical connotations of'conservative surgery'.Geddes gradually developed this concept through his prac-tices in Edinburgh and Dunfermline, the Great Britain, and various regions of India.Focused on sustaining social life,'conservative surgery'empha-sises enhancing urban built environments through detailed'diagnostic survey',prioritising clearing and improving over demolishment and reconstruc-tion.The concept of'conservative surgery'found ex-tensive applications in Geddes's early 20th-century town planning reports for Indian cities.Rooted in his biological background and sociological practice,Geddes's urban conservation ideas reflect his under-standing of cities as organisms and underscore his concern for the social value of historic cities.关键词
