Balancing Value Protection and Public Enhancement in Historic District Regeneration,Exemplified by the 11-1 Sub-Section in Yihe Road Historic and Cultural District,Nanjing,Jiangsu Province

Abstract
The Yihe Road Historic and Cultural Dis-trict in Nanjing,Jiangsu Province,the former'No.1 New Residential District'planned in the 1929 Cap-ital Plan,is one of the best-preserved historic dis-tricts in China.It boasts a large number of former residences of notable figures and is among the first 30 Historic and Cultural Districts.This article presents the regeneration of the 11-1 Sub-section,located at the southern end of the district,which serves as the first-stage experimental project in the revitalisation plan for the entire district.The regen-eration design is based on extensive historical re-search and on-site investigations and surveying and mapping,with a purpose of distinguishing architec-tural heritage from later building additions during the'repletion period'.It begins with an assessment of the buildings within the sub-section,followed by accurate classification and the implementation of'preserving,rehabilitating,demolishing,and adding'methods.The regeneration design empha-sises a design strategy of'spatial connectivity,street blocks restoration,and symbiosis of the old and the new',so as to achieve historic district regeneration while preserving its historical characteristics.关键词
