Abstract

Soil desiccation cracking and curling is widely concerned by people,especially with the vagaries of cli-mate and the frequent occurrence of extreme dry weather.The desiccation cracks and curling weaken the strength of soil structure,causing various potential natural disasters.However,the problem of soil desiccation cracking and curling presents a certain level of complexity.Specifically,it is coupled with the process of moisture evaporation,soil shrinkage,dry cracking,air intrusion and soil curl,and involves the interaction of many physical fields such as heat-water-mechanics-chemistry.Therefore,it is still a great scientific challenge to develop a numerical model with efficient algorithm,capable of realizing the calculation of moisture evolution,volume shrinkage,crack growth and curling under evaporation conditions.The authors intend to discuss the aforementioned issues in two papers.In this paper,the mechanical mechanism of desiccation cracking and curling is analyzed with the main influencing factors,and the foundational equations of moisture diffusion and the elastic-plastic constitutive are provided for nu-merical calculation.In addition,the development and application of mesh-based method in the soil desiccation cracking and curling are reviewed,including the advantage and existing problems of grid numerical method.Through analysis and comparison,the conventional mesh-based numerical methods are constrained by the assump-tions of deformation continuity,making it difficult to address issues of multi-crack and three-dimensional complex crack propagation.In contrast,mesh-free particle methods directly construct interpolation basis functions on a set of discrete points,showing great potential in capturing the complex soil desiccation cracking and curling behavior.
