Abstract

To investigate the effects of temperature and relative humidity on the creep behavior of coarse granular materials,firstly,triaxial isotropic compression creep tests with varying temperature and relative humidity conditions were performed on typical coarse granular materials collected from a rockfill dam.The effects of temperature and relative humidity on the ultimate creep strain and creep deformation rate were comprehensively analyzed.Secondly,the effects of temperature and relative humidity on delayed particle breakage in coarse granular materials were analyzed by using the theory of subcritical crack propagation.An ultimate deformation calculation formula and a convergent time-dependent stress transformation equation accounting for temperature and relative humidity were derived.Thirdly,based on the derived ultimate deformation calculation formula and the time-dependent stress transformation equation,a creep equation for coarse granular materials considering temperature and humidity effects was proposed.Finally,the proposed creep equation was validated through the simulation of the experimental results.The results show that the creep deformation and creep rate of coarse granular materials increase with the increase of temperature and relative humidity under constant load.The proposed creep equation has a solid theoretical foundation,and the creep characteristics of coarse granular materials under different temperature and relative humidity conditions can be described by one set of parameters.The simulation results obtained from the creep equation are in good agreement with those of the experiment,indicating that the proposed creep equation can effectively capture the experimental behavior of coarse granular materials under the combined influence of temperature and relative humidity.
