Effect of Protective Atmosphere on Microstructure and Properties of 316L Stainless Steel Fabricated by Laser Additive Manufacturing

Abstract
This study investigates the influence of different protective atmospheres(argon and nitrogen)on the microstruc-ture and mechanical properties of 316L stainless steel fabricated by laser wire additive manufacturing,aiming to optimize the laser additive manufacturing process for 316L stainless steel.High-speed laser wire additive manufacturing technology was employed to prepare 316L stainless steel specimens under pure argon and pure nitrogen atmospheres.The microstruc-ture,including grain size,orientation,and phase composition,was characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM),electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD),and X-ray diffraction(XRD).Mechanical properties were evaluated using tensile testing,and fracture morphology was analyzed.The results show that the microstructure of 316L stainless steel under both argon and nitrogen atmospheres is primarily austenitic,with a small amount of ferrite distributed at the austenite grain boundaries.The average grain size under nitrogen atmosphere(59 μm)is smaller than that under argon atmosphere(66 μm),and the size of oxide inclusions is also reduced.Nitrogen,as a strong austenite-forming element,promotes austenite nucle-ation and refines the grains.Tensile tests reveal that the specimens under nitrogen atmosphere exhibit higher tensile strength(602.9 MPa)and yield strength(220.5 MPa)compared to those under argon atmosphere(549.5 MPa and 201.3 MPa,respec-tively),along with improved elongation.Fracture analysis indicates that both atmospheres result in ductile fracture,with smaller oxide inclusions under nitrogen atmosphere,thereby enhancing the strength and plasticity of the laser wire additive manufactured 316L stainless steel.关键词
