Spontaneous bone regeneration in segmental mandibular defects:2 cases report and literature review

Abstract
Spontaneous mandibular bone regeneration is usually defined as a phenomenon that self-formation of new bone in mandibular critical size defects.The aim of this study was to present two cases of spontaneous mandibular bone regeneration after segmental resection and review the literature.Since the first report of such case in 1946,only 51 cases have been reported in the English literature,most of which are isolated reports,and in most cases the phenomenon of bone regeneration are unexpected.Furthermore,none of such cases have been reported in the Chinese literature.While the exact explanation or mechanism of this bone regeneration is not clearly understood.Many predisposing factors,including the presence of the periosteum,presence of stumps or fragments of bone,the age of the patient,post-operative immobilization,local infection and genetic factors,have been suggested.It is suggested that for those patients requiring partial or segmental mandibulectomy,the periosteum should always be preserved if conditions permit for some spontaneous bone regeneration.关键词
