Imagination and Reality:Exploring the Historical Consciousness in the Study of Venice by John Ruskin
摘要
Abstract
John Ruskin's The Stones of Venice(1851-1853)reinterprets the history of Venice through artistic evidence such as architecture, sculpture, and painting, positing that artistic style is a reflection of public morals, and aligning the political decline of Venice with the transformation of its spiritual beliefs.Cultural critic Tony Tanner suggests that John Ruskin sought to create his own Venice. While influenced by Byron and Turner,he boldly asserted that the evidence provided by visual materials is"irrefutable"and advocated for the integration of visual art and discourse to explore the theme of Venice's decline. As Francis Haskell notes, historians and art historians share a consensus on the impact of images on historical imagination. Thus, through historical images, they attempt to recreate the past or at least offer a"historical consciousness."关键词
