Efficient removal of polystyrene nanoplastics from water by magnetic attapulgite

Abstract
Nanoplastics originating from plastic debris are prevalent in the environment,posing significant threats to ecosystems and human health.To address this issue,MAtp(magnetic attapulgite)was synthesized through a chemical co-precipitation method.The results indicate that MAtp achieves a maximum adsorption capacity of 75.43 mg/g for PS-NPs(polystyrene nanoplastics).BET and VSM analyses reveal that the adsorbent possesses a substantial specific surface area of 183.13 m2/g and exhibits excellent superparamagnetism,fulfilling the criteria for magnetic separation.Characterization techniques including SEM,FT-IR,XRD and XPS demonstrates a significant electrostatic attraction between MAtp and PS-NPs,with Fe—O functional groups playing a crucial role in the entrapment of PS-NPs.The adsorption process of PS-NPs onto MAtp aligns with the proposed first-order kinetic equation and the Sips isothermal adsorption model.The primary mechanisms of adsorption include electrostatic attraction and surface complexation.Adsorption-desorption experiments confirm that the MAtp adsorbent possesses commendable adsorption capacity and recyclability.This study presents a promising and innovative approach for the efficient removal of nanoplastics from wastewater.关键词
