Abstract
The Battle of Kunyang(昆阳之战)was a famous historical battle in ancient China where a smaller force tri-umphed over a larger one,marking a decisive moment for the collapse of Wang Mang's regime.It was also a key battle where Liu Xiu demonstrated his military prowess.In the imperial edict after Liu Xiu's ascension,his achievements and divine mandate were outlined,with the Battle of Kunyang being the first event mentioned.The battle thus became a political basis for the legiti-macy and rationale behind Liu Xiu's rule.Moreover,the military talent and exceptional bravery Liu Xiu exhibited in the battle garnered public support and contributed positively to his image during the process of unifying the empire.After the establishment of the Eastern Han Dynasty(25-220 A.D.),due to the widespread belief in prophetic thought,the Battle of Kunyang gradually became sanctified and mythologized,symbolizing Liu Xiu's divine mandate.关键词
