民国新文学史家笔下的桐城古文OA
The Tongcheng School of Ancient-Style Prose in the Writings of Literary Historians of the Republic of China
五四新文化运动展开之后,新文学家在理论与创作上声势渐强.为进一步推动新文学建设,确立新文学在文学史上的地位,从胡适到李一鸣为代表的新文学史家、文艺批评家以著史的方式,逐步完成解构旧体文学权威与建构新文学正宗地位的任务.作为清代极具影响力的旧体文学流派,桐城古文在新文学史家笔下被塑造为不能适于时代需要的形象,在新文学史著作中所占比重不断降低;林纾因以古文翻译外国小说的创举闻名于世,亦被新文学史家与桐城派捆绑在一起,列作解构的主要对象.这一系列举措不仅使新文学完成对旧体文学的跨越,成为现代文学史叙述的主体,也在很大程度上遮蔽了民国时期旧体文学的实际成就.
Following the May Fourth New Culture Movement,the advocates of new literature began to gain significant influ-ence both in literary theory and creative practice.To further advance the construction of new literature and secure its position in literary history,new literary historians and critics,represented by figures such as Hu Shi and Li Yiming,undertook the task of deconstructing the authority of traditional literature and establishing the legitimacy of new literature as the mainstream.As one of the most influential schools of traditional Chinese literature during the Qing Dynasty,the Tongcheng School of Ancient-Style Prose was depicted by these historians as a literary tradition incapable of meeting the demands of the modern era,and its presence in works of literary history gradually diminished.Lin Shu,famed for his groundbreaking efforts in translating foreign novels into clas-sical Chinese,was also closely associated with the Tongcheng School by these literary historians and became a central target of critique.These deliberate efforts not only enabled the ascendancy of new literature over traditional forms,positioning it as the dominant narrative in modern Chinese literary history,but also largely obscured the actual achievements of traditional literature during the Republican period(1911-1949).
