Abstract

The wastewater from cleaning of chemical barrels necessitates further deep treatment due to its complex composition and high concentration of pollutants.However,effective technological solutions are unavailable to address this problem now.It is expected that the Constructed Rapid Infiltration(CRI)system will mitigate tail water pollution with special degrading bacteria after the long-term acclimation.Nevertheless,the specific processes and application parameters remain unclear.Therefore,the cleaning tail water from chemical barrels of a company was taken as an example in the paper.We adopted double-layer CRI treatment to improve degradation of chemical oxygen demand(COD),biochemical oxygen demand(BOD5),ammonia nitrogen(NH3-N),total phosphorus(TP)and total nitrogen(TN),and applied an orthogonal experimental method to optimize four process parameters(packing layer thickness,flooding time,hydraulic load,and wet-to-dry ratio)for the optimal operation process.Our findings demonstrated that the optimal operational parameters for wastewater treatment were a packing thickness of 90 cm,a flooding time of 1 hour,a hydraulic loading rate of 80 L/m2·d,and a wet-to-dry ratio of 1∶3.BOD5 and NH3-N exhibited minimal sensitivity to each factor,with the fluctuation range of 95.68 to 98.37 and 94.49 to 97.65 respectively.Therefore,there is no need to change processing parameters when the quality and quantity of wastewater vary.The primary influence factor for the degradation rate of TP was packing thickness,followed by the flooding time.Consequently,it is necessary to increase packing thickness or replace part of the packing and appropriately extend the flooding time when there is an increase in TP in wastewater.For both COD and TN,the wet-to-dry ratio of 1∶3 emerged as the primary influence factor on degradation rate.Under such circumstances,the shorter the flooding times,the better the TN removal rates.The longer the flooding times,the better the TN degradation rates.It is advisable to determine which pollutant index(COD or TN)takes precedence before adjusting the optimal flooding time based real-time wastewater quality during operation.The outcomes of the study can serve as technical references for tail water treatment and real-time process optimization of specialized industries.
