Abstract

Affected by the weakened low-pressure circulation and cold air from Typhoon Doksuri,Beijing experienced an unprecedented heavy rainstorm from July 29 to August 2,2023,leading to severe flooding in the Beisha River Basin of Changping District.To investigate the causes of the disaster,hydrological sur-veys and rationality analyses were conducted to reconstruct the flood evolution process of the Nankou and Baiyangcheng flood detention areas,as well as surrounding rivers in the upper reaches of the Beisha River Basin.The results showed that the flood peak flow of the main rivers in the upper reaches,such as Beixiaoy-ingxi River,ranged from 89 to 185 m3/s,with a recurrence period of 10 to 20 years.The peak flood flow in Gaoyakou Channel and Sijiazhuang River ranged from 756 to 886 m3/s,with a recurrence period of over 50 years.Extreme heavy rainfall and the lack of controlling infrastructure were the primary causes of the se-vere damage to infrastructure.The research findings provide a technical basis for the future planning,de-sign,and construction of river channels and flood detention areas in the Beisha River Basin.
