Experimental study on the thermal runaway characteristics of large-capacity lithium-iron phosphate batteries

摘要

Abstract

To study the thermal runaway risk of large-capacity lithium-iron phosphate batteries,we take the 86Ah prismatic lithium-iron phosphate battery for energy storage as the research object and investigate the thermal runaway characteristics of large-capacity lithium-ion batteries with different states of charge(SOC)through a self-built thermal runaway experimental platform.Our results show the larger SOC leads to more active internal chemical reaction of the battery during thermal runaway,more intense thermal runaway,and more mass loss.SOC of the battery increases from 25%to 100%,the safety valve opening time reduces by 19%,and the thermal runaway trigger time is down by 53.1%.The SOC of a lithium-ion phosphate battery is directly proportional to the temperature at the time of thermal runaway.With the increase of battery SOC,the voltage fluctuation decreases and the rapid drop of battery voltage comes earlier,allowing the voltage changes to send earlier warnings to the thermal runaway.
