Effect of inoculation with ectomycorrhizal fungi on root morphological traits of Pinus massoniana seedlings under aluminium stress

Abstract
To investigate the effect of ectomycorrhizal fungi(ECMF)infection on root morphological traits of Pinus massoniana seedlings under aluminium stress,Lactarius deliciosus 2(Ld2)and Pisolithus tinctorius 715(Pt715)were used and inoculated with P.massoniana seedlings and treated with Al2(SO4)3 solution containing 1.0 mmol·L-1 Al3+.The root diameter,length,area,volume,and number of root tips were measured,and specific root length,specific root area,root tissue density,and root branching intensity were calculated.Roots were divided into three diameter classes(≤0.5 mm,0.5-1.0 mm,and>1.0 mm)to analyze the effects of ECMF on root morphological traits of P.massoniana seedlings under aluminium stress.The results show that ECMF significantly promotes root branching intensity and root length with a diameter of≤0.5 mm and significantly reduces root length,root area,and root volume with a diameter of 0.5-1.0 mm in P.massoniana under aluminium treatment(P<0.05).Ld2 significantly increases root biomass,total root length,total number of root tips,root tissue density,and number of root tips with a diameter of≤0.5 mm,as well as root length,root area,root volume with a diameter of>1.0 mm(P<0.05).This trend is also observed in Pt715 mycorrhizal seedlings,but it is not significant.ECMF inoculation changes the nutrient uptake strategy by changing the root morphology of P.massoniana,which promotes root growth and branching with a diameter of≤0.5 mm and depends on infected hyphae in roots with a diameter of 0.5-1.0 mm for nutrient uptake,and it facilitates root growth with a diameter of>1.0 mm for nutrient transport.Ld2 is more effective in promoting root growth of P.massoniana seedlings,suggesting that it is an excellent ECMF for alleviating aluminium stress in P.massoniana.关键词
