Abstract

Deposition of corrosion products on the surface of drinking water distribution pipes has been proven to be important for the distributed water quality deterioration.As a common pipe corrosion product,cupric oxide plays a crucial role in water safety control during drinking water distribution.In this study,the impact of factors including various organic matter origins,initial bromide concentration,and pH was investigated.The effect of cupric oxide on the disinfection by-product formation,bromine fractionation,and calculated toxicity was identified.Results show that for chlorinated water containing various organic matter origins,the regulated THMs increased by 6%~51%,and emerging DBPs,i.e.,HALs,HANs,and HAMs,were 1.8~3.5,1.1~1.8,and 1.1~2.6 times higher in the presence of 2 μM bromide and 0.025 g·L-1 cupric oxide,respectively,compared with groups without cupric oxide.The increase of bromide concentration and cupric oxide dose increased the disinfection by-product formation,organic bromine concentration,and calculated toxicity.Algal-impacted and effluent-impacted waters exhibited higher toxicity than waters containing natural organic matter since the haloacetonitriles and haloacetaldehydes served as driving factors of calculated toxicity.Changing pipe materials and elevating water pH seem to be alternatives to mitigate the disinfection by-product formation.This study sheds light on the understanding of the disinfection by-product formation under the influence of corrosion products on pipe surface and provides support for distributed water quality evaluation and risk control.
