Abstract

To investigate the interaction properties between the rockfill and geogrid,the pull-out and direct interface tests of geogrid reinforced rockfill were simulated using the discrete element method(DEM).The macro-and microscopic behaviors including force-displacement relationship,contact force chain,coordination number and the displacement,tensile force and damage of geogrid were analyzed.The results show that the maximum pull-out force increases and then decreases with increasing vertical stress.The interface coefficient of the direct interface test is already greater than 0.8 at a vertical stress of 50 kPa,and it increases with increasing vertical stress.During the pull-out process,the principal direction of normal contact force and the average coordination number of rockfill are basically unchanged,the displacement distribution of the geogrid along the pull-out direction shows a clear step segment,and the tensile force of the geogrid near the pull-out ends is larger.Geogrids suffer damage during the pull-out process,and the degree of damage increases with increasing pull-out displacement and vertical stress.These macro-and microscopic phenomena show that the interlocking between the rockfill and geogrid is well,the sliding between the geogrid and rockfills is not obvious,and the strength of geogrid can be fully utilized in the rockfills.
