Abstract

Wood,as a prominent biomass building material,possesses numerous exceptional inherent properties including aesthetically pleasing appearance,high strength-to-weight ratio,ease of processing,recyclability,and commendable thermal insulation performance.Consequently,it is widely utilized in construction and home-related applications.Surface color is a critical criterion in evaluating wood quality,primarily influenced by the lignin and extracts within the wood,which play a key role in determining its chromatic properties.This study examined the composition,functional groups,valence states of C and O elements,and color variations in natural wood powder,ligninized wood powder,and de-extracted wood powder before and after ferric iron ion treatment.The influence of ferric iron ion-induced extraction and lignin on the color of white oak was analyzed.The results demonstrated a significant reduction in both quantity and diversity of ketones,aldehydes,and esters present in the benzenol extract after the treatment with ferric iron ions,leading to a concomitant decrease in the abundance and variety of chromophores.The characteristic peak of the unsaturated carbonyl group in the infrared spectrum of lignin diminished or even partially disappeared.The characteristic absorption peak of lignin,typically observed in the range of 1 000 to 1 500 cm-1,was no longer detectable.The atomic composition and relative proportion of C1,C2,C3,C4,O1,and O2 underwent simultaneous alterations.These changes primarily indicated a reduction in the concentration of C and an increase in the abundance of C—O.The complex reaction of iron ions with carbonyl,hydroxyl,and carboxyl groups in lignin and extractions was indirectly proven.The UV diffuse reflection spectra demonstrated that the direct ferric iron ion treatment of white oak powder led to a reduction in its optical reflectance within the visible region,accompanied by a red shift(towards longer wavelengths)of λmax in the K/S absorption spectrum.Furthermore,there was a significant enhancement in light absorption within both the near ultraviolet and visible regions,resulting in deepening of color.After the delignification process or removal of white oak powder from the extract,subsequent treatment with ferric iron ions led to a noticeable enhancement in optical reflectivity within the visible light range.Moreover,there was a blue-shift(towards shorter wavelengths)observed in the λmax of the K/S absorption spectrum,resulting in reduced absorption both in near-ultraviolet and visible light regions.Consequently,this adjustment produced a visible light absorption intensity closely resembling that of natural white oak.This approach effectively enhanced color control for white oak with significant chromatic variation,thereby aligning it more closely with its inherent natural hue.
