Effects of furfuryl alcohol modification on the microstructure and resin distribution in poplar wood

Abstract
Furfurylation modification is a cell wall modification technique to improve wood properties,and the modification efficiency depends on influences of furfuryl alcohol resin on wood microstructure in some extent.Therefore,modified poplar wood(Populus tomentosa)with different furfuryl alcohol mass ratios was used as the research object,microstructure of modified wood with furfuryl alcohol resin was investigated by the optical microscope,laser scanning confocal microscope(LSCM)and scanning electron microscope(SEM).The significance analysis of the impact of furfurylation on microstructure of poplar wood was conducted by the one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA).Polar small molecules of furfuryl alcohol entered poplar wood through impregnation treatment and polymerized into polymer resins in the presence of heating and a catalyst.The resins significantly affected the microstructure of poplar wood.The optical microscopy clearly showed that furfuryl alcohol resin was mainly distributed in the vessel,fiber,and ray of poplar wood,and existed in both cell walls and cell lumens of fibers and ray cells.Compared with untreated wood,the fiber cell wall thickness of the modified poplar wood obviously increased,and there was a good linear relationship between the macroscopic bulking coefficient and the microscopic fiber cell wall thickness(R2=0.935 5).At the same time,the cell lumen area of the modified poplar wood significantly decreased,and the area proportion of resin to cell lumen increased linearly with furfuryl alcohol mass ratios(R2=0.992 6).In addition,with an increase of furfuryl alcohol mass ratios,the fiber aspect ratio of the modified poplar wood increased.LSCM observed that the fluorescence intensity in the cell lumens and intercellular space was higher than that in the cell walls of the fiber cells.In addition,the microscopic images can also be observed that the fluorescence intensity variation in cell walls was that fluorescence intensity gradually decreased from the cell wall-cell lumen interface to secondary walls and increased along cell wall-intercellular layer.Combined with the observation results of LSCM and SEM,it was found that the deposition of furfuryl alcohol resin in the fiber cell wall reduced the porosity of the poplar wood,which was attributed to the furfuryl alcohol resin distributed in the pores of cell wall,cell lumen,intercellular space,pits,and perforations.The above results showed that furfuryl alcohol mass ratio remarkably changed poplar wood microstructure.At the same time,the ANOVA analysis also indicated that furfurylation had a significant effect on the wood microstructure.This study provides necessary theoretical support for revealing the modification mechanism with furfuryl alcohol resin on wood properties.关键词
