How does the Development of Big Data Affect Export Technological Sophistication?

Abstract
As China navigates a critical period of economic transformation,the widespread application of big data technology has profoundly transformed the realms of production,circulation and distribution within the econo-my and society,providing unprecedented opportunities for the high-quality development of trade and the increase in export technological sophistication.Starting from the perspective of constructing national big data comprehensive ex-perimental zones(NBDCEZs),this paper probes deeply into the intrinsic connections and mechanisms between big data and trade upgrades,providing theoretical support and practical guidance for the application of big data in pro-moting high-quality development of trade. This paper systematically reviews studies related to big data development,the construction of NBDCEZs,and export technological sophistication.It delves into the mechanisms by which the zones influence export technological sophistication from three dimensions:technology R&D and innovation,industrial agglomeration,and the construc-tion of institutional environments.This paper employs panel data covering 286 prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2020,treating the establishment of NBDCEZs as a quasi-natural experiment.It constructs a time-varying difference-in-differences(DID)model to empirically research the impact of the zones on export technological sophistication.Moreover,a mediating effect model is developed to further test the operational mechanisms of the zones'impact on export technological sophistication,and a spatial econometric model is included in the research framework to exam-ine the spatial spillover effects. The findings reveal that policies regarding the NBDCEZs enhance the export technological sophistication of pi-lot cities.This conclusion remains robust after adjusting sample selection,optimizing model settings,changing the measurement methods of the dependent variable,and excluding the impacts of competitive policies.The heteroge-neity analysis reveals that the promotional effect is more significant in the eastern and central regions,large cities,non-resource-based cities,and less developed areas.Mechanism analysis indicates that promoting innovation and R&D,facilitating industrial agglomeration,and optimizing the institutional environment are key mechanisms through which the zones enhance export technological sophistication.In the extended analysis,even after incorpora-ting spatial effects,the construction of the zones continues to increase export technological sophistication,but there is a negative spatial spillover effect on neighboring cities'export technological sophistication. This paper offers policy recommendations to promote the high-quality development of trade empowered by big data.The findings not only help to deepen the understanding of the policy effects of big data development but also provide a reference for exploring new pathways towards the digitalization of trade and strengthening trade through digital means.关键词
