Advances in numerical model of soil desiccation cracking and curling Ⅱ:Meshfree and particle-based numerical methods and peridynamics

Abstract
Soils desiccation cracking and curling can potentially trigger natural disasters,making it a long-standing issue of concern in both academic and engineering fields.However,the physical processes and mechanical mecha-nisms underlying desiccation cracking and curling are complex,with numerous influencing factors,posing signifi-cant challenges for the accurate replicate of the whole processes based on the theoretical and experimental analysis.Although mesh-based methods have made significant research progress,cracking issues continue to pose challenges due to their intrinsic limitations.Meshfree and particle-based methods offer unique advantages in describing crack-ing phenomena and have been increasingly developed in recent years for analyzing soil desiccation cracking and curling.This paper reviews the major advancements in mesh-free numerical models and certain hybrid numerical methods in this field.Additionally,peridynamics is recommended for analyzing soil desiccation cracking and curl-ing,with the related research results of the author team.The research results indicated that peridynamics still re-quires further investigation in several areas:numerical models for multi-physical field coupling analyses,elasto-plastic constitutive relationships,multi-scale simulations,the evolution of soil property parameters accompanied by complex boundary conditions,and the development of high-precision and efficient numerical algorithms.关键词
