The Effect of Stereotype Threats on Social Approach-Avoidance Tendencies

Abstract
Objective:Stereotype threat has the potential to adversely affect social relationships,while also increase the inclination to seek social support.The multi-threat framework theory suggests that the specific type of threat may play a cru-cial role in determining these outcomes.This study aims to systematically investigate the influence of stereotype threat on social approach-avoidance tendencies by categorizing the threat types.Methods:Experiment 1(n=165)and experiment 2(n=168)activated self-concept threat and group-concept threat,respectively,and assessed social approach-avoidance ten-dencies using the face approach-avoidance task.Results:Experiment 1 revealed that individuals under self-concept threat exhibited a stronger relative approach-avoidance tendency compared to non-threat situations,indicating that self-concept threat promoted social approach tendencies.In contrast,experiment 2 showed that individuals experiencing group-concept threat displayed a weaker relative approach-avoidance tendency than in non-threat situations,suggesting that group-concept threat triggered social avoidance tendencies.Conclusion:The impact of stereotype threat on social interac-tions varies depending on the specific type of threat.关键词
