摘要

Abstract

The Beijing swift(Apus apus pekinensis)is a key protected wild animal species in Beijing.To investigate the histological characteristics of the small intestine in the Beijing swift,this study applied hematoxylin-eosin(H.E.)staining and alcian blue-periodic acid-Schiff(AB-PAS)staining to examine the histological structure of the duodenum,jejunum,and ileum.Various parameters,including villus height,mucosal thickness,villus width,crypt depth,and muscular layer thickness,were measured for each intestinal segment.Additionally,the villus height-to-crypt depth ratio(V/C)and the number of goblet cells in the small intestine were calculated.The results indicated that the small intestine in the Beijing swift consists of the mucosa,submucosa,tunicae muscularis,and serosa from the inside out,with no central lacteal in any intestinal segment.Furthermore,the duodenal submucosa lacked duodenal glands.The villus height in the duodenum was very highly significantly greater than in the jejunum(P<0.001)and ileum(P<0.001),while the mucosal thickness was also significantly higher than that in the jejunum(P<0.05)and ileum(P<0.05).The V/C ratio in the duodenum was significantly higher than in the ileum(P<0.05).The villus width in the ileum was very highly significantly smaller than in the duodenum(P<0.001)and jejunum(P=0.001).The crypt depth and muscular layer thickness in the ileum were very highly significantly greater than in the duodenum(P<0.001)and jejunum(P<0.001).The number of goblet cells in the small intestine increased significantly from the duodenum to the ileum,with very highly significant differences among the three segments(P<0.001).These findings provide basic data for further research on the intestinal development of the Beijing swift and the diagnosis and prevention of intestinal diseases.
